EXHIBITIONS / IZIKO
STILL LIFE AND LIFE DRAWINGS
A MOMENT CAPTURED OR PRESERVED
GROUP EXHIBITION
Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe
23 November – 7 December 2018/ Cape Town, South Africa
The exhibition, curated by Lonwabo Kilani, is the visual manifestation of a 4-day workshop that runs before the opening. Five artists working within the contemporary South African art scene, will collaborate and create the artworks on display.
Lonwabo Kilani states, “the workshop will focus on the idea of movement and stillness, of life and death, the traditional idea of ‘life drawing’ that presupposes an image generated from life or something living. It will also reflect on ‘still lifes’, which is making work generated from a single or a group of objects gathered.”
Discussing the criteria for selection of the participants, Kilani reiterates that each of these artists has significantly affected the art world as they bring unique qualities into a collaborative process. “It is also that they have sought excellence in what they have created and because they have created works that broaden our understanding of the personal and collective journey within the human condition, and these are essential qualities for understanding and relating to still life, life and movement and the intricacy of this duality.”
In support of art education and the meaningful work museum educators conduct, the artists and curators of “Still Life and Life Drawings: A Moment Captured or Preserved?” will donate textbooks to further enrich the lessons being taught by museum educators at Iziko Museums.

EXHIBITIONS / BERLIN ART WEEK
FAKED PERFECTION
SOLO EXHIBITION
September 26 – October 7th 2018 / Reichenberger Strasse 154, 10999 Berlin, Germany
“SaySay uses the photographs of mannequins as the symbolism of the world we currently live in, emphasising this disconnect from reality. Their exterior representing a fake perfection of what women and men think they should look like, flawless with perfect smiles living perfect lives we misleadingly portray on social media. He says we can all take the perfect selfie, show the world
we are social beings, out having fun in trendy places, living the dream, but asks the question; are we truly happy?
Curated by Anna Sarre, well known visual and performance art curator from Berlin, the exhibition will show a selection of photographs accompanied by philosophical messages and video installation.”
Exhibition starts on the Wednesday 26th of September at 6pm and runs until the 7th of October. Art Fabrique hosted by Music.Art.Berlin, SaySayLove SBKG.

EVENTS / MAD LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION
ARTWORK PRESENTED AT THE PHAKAMA UK BENEFIT
October 2nd 2018 / PAINTERS HALL, LONDON
The 2018 UK Benefit, reveals the establishment of the fundraising mantra and symbolism, that of Phakama. Phakama, originating from isiZulu, means Rise Up. The power of this word encompasses so much of what MAD Leadership Foundation aspires to, in both our scholars and that of our supporters. The chosen symbolism is the King Protea, being the national flower of South Africa. The King Protea adapts to survive wildfires by its thick underground stem, which contains many dormant buds; these will produce the new growth after the fire. The King Protea quite literally rises up even after it has been burnt down.
The combination of this iconography and powerful symbolic word together creates the movement for this event. Phakama UK Benefit stands for the strength and resilience our scholars possess in continually and consistently rising up and above any circumstances or hurdles that might inhibit their potential or diminish their dreams. It too stands for the challenge we place to our supporters, to rise up and take a stand for education and leadership development in South Africa. To rise up for our future leaders and to rise up and be the difference.
Join us for a spectacular evening of philanthropy and sophistication, set to the art nouveau backdrop of Painters’ Hall, an iconic building in the heart of London.
Phakama UK Benefit provides a window to South Africa – a cultural showcase and celebration of what South Africa has to offer in food, wine, art and entertainment. Combining an appreciation for South African art, heritage, and philanthropy. Guests will enjoy a drinks reception; South African inspired food and La Motte wines, a live and silent art auction, entertainment by the acoustic folk-rock and afro-blues due – Bottomless Coffee Band and more. This year’s event is set to be a spectacular evening celebrating the best of South Africa.

EXHIBITIONS / THE INTERNATIONAL ART LABORATORY
The International Art Laboratory – Intimate Loneliness
June 28 – July 4 2018 / Berlin, Germany
ART LABORATORY CALLING
3pm to 9pm from the 28th June to 4th July 2018.
Join us for creative, expressive sessions with artist SaySay.love
A fun and unconventional way to express your ideas about self-satisfaction in contemporary society and loneliness in private life. At the end of the laboratory there will be a performance based on the acknowledged theater director Yury Muravitsky from the Theater DOC, Moscow and an art exhibition of SaySay.Love, a Berlin-based photographer. Curated by Anna Sarre.
Art Laboratory is a form of an investigation on the current social change, happening on the basis of collaboration and conversation among the art-makers and art-scholars. At the end of the art, there is a collective work that summarizes the outcome of this investigation, which will be shown as part of the art exhibition. The first display will take place in Berlin.
Sex mit den Dingen stands for the current trend within the contemporary society to choose self-satisfaction over the exchange of mutual corporeal sympathy. This behavior demonstrates the rights of individuals to achieve and prove independence from others, and leads to the development of personal borders, which prevent any reciprocation of empathy. Can we still experience mutual sexual interest? Do we need another partner to meet our sexual demands? Or is sex “alone” enough for us? These are the main questions about the idea of SaySayLove (photographer, architect), the main curator of the laboratory Anna Sarre and co-curator Arina Abelev and a notable theater maker Jurij Muravitskj from Moscow’s independent theater scene. Share your visions with us and let it travel in Europe.
We are looking for:
Video artists
Fashion designers / theater costume designers
Photographers

EXHIBITIONS / ZDES Na Tagnake Gallery
‘ЗДЕСЬ БОЛЬШЕ НЕТ ВОДЫ’ / ‘THERE IS NO MORE WATER HERE’
May 15 – June 6 2018 / MOSCOW, RUSSIA
“Выставка «Здесь больше нет воды» – это новая серия фотографий, инсталляция и видео берлинского архитектора и исследователя визуальных форм, известного под псевдонимом Saysay Love.

EXHIBITIONS / Coningsby Gallery
CONINGSBY GALLERY
May 20 – 26 2018 / LONDON, UK
‘Artist SaySay.Love was born in Berlin and now spends half his year in Cape Town, South Africa. It was here that he, along with over three million other residents, recently experienced the worst drought in the city’s history. “Being European, water shortages are outside my life-experience. Until now water has always been in abundance, something that I took for granted, an almost invisible resource, like air.” He said. The drought changed all this and inspired the artist to embark on a journey of discovery into water itself. SaySay.Love spent six months photographing water across the world, from Africa to Poland, in settings varying from oceans and rivers to inside plumbing and bottles.
The resulting series of images show the artist’s interpretations of the mercurial structure and beauty of water and its integral relationship to environment.’
“For me, photography is both an intentional and a spontaneous medium. My works strive to disseminate the idea that water has a memory and force us to look back at the past (as birth), and ahead to the idea of the waterless future as death itself. But it’s not that simple and clear cut. Water shapes history. It is a record imprinted in nature. Bodies of water, like photographs, contain memories, cultural and biological. Maps do not present merely a visual space, they are interactions between the existence and non-existence of water: Green lush landscapes with flowing rivers, to warm-coloured dry arid terrains.
They allow for culture to flourish and the historical record of habitation and migration. In dendrochronology trees reveal historical imprints of water allowing us to discover the history of droughts and weather patterns. An abstract documentary of seasons in the truest sense. The existence and non-existence of water, the micro-printing in seasons, as ring patterns are translated through secular patterns. Such abstraction, visual and complex, I aim to capture in photography.” SaySay.Love

EVENT REVIEW / RUTGER BRANDT GALLERY
Matrix of Water
May 9 – 13 2018 / AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
“The gallery’s mission is to showcase contemporary art by emerging young artists as well as established international artists in a multi-generational program. We aim for a long-term commitment in developing the artists’ career and the gallery acts as a liaison with other galleries outside The Netherlands.
One of the connecting factors, how varied the outcome may be, is socially committed and narrative art to be found in various disciplines. Political, social actuality and individualism are key ingredients to reflect the spirit of this age. Confronted with the many aspects of human relations, especially those of alienation, isolation, absurdum and the raw side of life, these works call for self-reflection. These artists seek new ways of representation that make us aware of unexpected aspects of everyday life. Our exhibition program is dedicated to aesthetic, progressive and thought-provoking shows.”

EVENT REVIEW / INVESTEC CAPE TOWN ART FAIR
‘SIMULACRUM’ – AGOG GALLERY
March 10 – April 7 2018 / JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
“Following the success of his previous exhibitions, ‘The Gift of Water l,ll & lll’ at Gallery One11 and AVA in Cape Town, and the Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg – artist and activist, SaySay.Love, is heading to Maboneng with a new showcase entitled ‘Simulacrum: Re-imagined Realities?’. This exhibition thematically places the life-force that is water at the centre of this showcase of work, and challenges us to question our mortality – where we come from, and where we are going – and what reality we envision for ourselves in the near, and distant future.
‘Simulacrum: Re-imagined Realities’ takes us on a journey of the artists own relationship with water starting with the artwork Baptism, which reflects on the genesis of life – emoting images of DNA – the sequencing of all living things – which ultimately shapes our destiny.
The exhibition is also supplemented by works from ‘The Gift of Water’ which reflect the journey and relationship SaySay has with this life-giving element – captured in its various forms and guises – highlighting the scarcity and preciousness of this valuable resource.
Founded in 2017, Agog Gallery is located in Maboneng – arguably the cultural capital of Johannesburg – and finds its inspiration in the belief that the meaning of art is also the meaning of the artist. Agog gallery is dedicated to the promotion of both local and international artists, and sets out to connect artists with collectors while maintaining a standard of high-quality, yet affordable art. “

‘THE GIFT OF WATER: CHAPTER II’ / THE AVA GALLERY
December 28 2017 – January 13 2018 / Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA
“Inspired by the natural world around him, it was only fitting that saysay would return the favour to his source of inspiration, as well as the global source of life; water. ‘Chapter Two’ promises to be a creative extension of saysay’s unique style, including larger than life images and awe-inspiring compositions.
Saysay has been documenting nature’s most precious and inspiring occurrences, translating his experiences into an aesthetic feast for the eyes. His visual abstraction achieves a mystique that is often undocumented within photography – a medium most known for its realism and accuracy.”

“SaySay.Love – a fine art photographer working only with his iPhone – sees the limitations of using his phone as both a challenge and an opportunity. Born with an optical disability that hinders his perception of depth, speed and distance, SaySay’s artistic vision remains pure. It is vibrant, quick and eclectic, and transports his viewers into the very fabric of our being, lending an insight and breakthrough into the very workings of our complex planet. SaySay’s photographic works present a calm and considered observation of nature, expressed through his own personal painterly style as feeling throughout the various images.”
